Uno Chartert School Surprise SMocK 6.17.12

I'm going to backtrack a little bit and share the SMocK events that have happened throughout the past....3 months.  First, is UNO Charter School SMocK!  As some of you may remember, I did a little fundraising to provide a class of third grade students a little bit of art for a day.  On June 17th....we begin our summer SMocKing.

SMocK: when parties and painting mix

My name is Yianna Angelopoulos and I am the founder and creator of SMocK. About four years ago I wanted to combine two of the things I love the most: art and entertaining. This idea was a work in progress, for a long time, until one day two great friends lit the fire that had slowly fizzled.

I am an elementary art teacher and have been for 12 years. Throughout the 12 years, I have traveled many parts of the world, learned about art and education, and, most importantly have been inspired by the places, faces and spaces I have encountered. I share these vingettes with my students on a daily basis and have found great joy in sharing my experiences with friends and family. I wanted to have...everyone...experience what I have experienced through painting and enjoying life.

I began my career as an elementary art teacher in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. A teacher of honor and awards, she felt a need to share her own knowledge of art and art education with colleagues near and far. More so, Ifelt the most important 'thing' to give a kid is the knowledge that he or she is not alone; that the world is incredibly small place when you have big ideas.

A graduate of The University of Iowa with a BA in Art History, BFA in Drawing and a teaching certificate, I set my goals on enriching the lives of my students through art. My professional pursuits led me to study painting in Venice, Italy as a graduate student of New York University and followed by becoming a National Board Certified teacher. Along the way, I figured out how to combine the three most important aspects of her profession:

art, education and travel.

Between 2008 and 2010, I participated in two distinguished programs: Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program and the Distinguished Fulbright Award in Teaching program. In both endeavors I embraced and learned about different cultures, their history and educational systems; bringing my knowledge and experiences back to her own art room. I was awarded The Illinois Alliance for Education Visual Art Educator Award in 2012, honoring her achievement and dedication to arts education. My drive and passion led me to create my own movement of SMocKing, creating a unique and fun experience for kids and adults to make something.

You know, it is really wonderful to see how kids just glow when they have created something great. I wanted to take that glow and the enthusiasm and capture it in a bottle of paint, and splash it on to a canvas. Young or old, it's amazing what a paint brush can do and what it brings out.

So, I decided to SMocK the world....so, c'mon...get SMocKing.
